How results are ordered: alphabetically by institution, or by most recently checked when you choose that sort. There is no price ranking, because tuition in different currencies, fee categories and bases (per year, per credit, whole program) is not comparable. Adjacent subjects such as landscape architecture appear only when you choose a subject. A value we could not verify is shown as “not published”, never as “no”. Items marked Sponsored are paid placements; they never change accreditation information, verification or order. Online programs are not counted as physically located in a state or city, and an institution’s location does not tell you whether it enrols students from your country.

About architecture education in Portugal

How architecture education is organised

Portuguese architecture schools mostly teach an integrated master's (Mestrado Integrado) in a single university cycle of about five years and 300 ECTS: a three-year first cycle plus a two-year second cycle. DGES describes the integrated cycle as a long initial-training cycle of 300 to 360 ECTS for professions where EU rules or stable practice fix the length, with the licenciado title awarded after the first 180 ECTS. Schools state that inscription in the Ordem dos Arquitetos follows completion of both cycles.

Qualification structures

Names and levels are local to Portugal. Similar names in other countries are not interchangeable.

Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura (1st + 2nd cycles)
Single-cycle route of 10 semesters and 300 ECTS entered through the national access contest. Examples verified: Universidade Lusófona (Lisbon and Porto), FA.ULisboa, ESAP, ESG Gallaecia and UBI. Source
Doutoramento em Arquitetura (3rd cycle)
Research doctorate. FA.ULisboa runs a 4-year, 240 ECTS PhD taught partly at a distance with an English-language calendar; UBI runs a third-cycle programme with 15 places in 2026. Source

Bodies that matter, and what each one does

Accreditation, validation, education authority and registration are different roles. Do not read a listing by one body as evidence from another.

A3ES - Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior
National agency that assesses and accredits higher-education institutions and study programmes; schools cite its accreditation and registration numbers. The agency's own results database was not checked.
DGES - Direção-Geral do Ensino Superior
Government directorate that publishes the national higher-education system, access rules and course registrations.
Ordem dos Arquitetos
Professional association which, per schools' statements, admits architects after the integrated master's. Its own site could not be fetched (TLS certificate error), so its rules were not verified.
Directive 2005/36/EC (EU professional qualifications)
EU framework under which professional recognition is granted by a competent authority such as an Ordem; Portuguese schools state their courses are recognised under it.

Route to registration

Current rules as described by the official source; always check the authority directly.

DGES explains that professional recognition is the authorization by a competent authority such as a professional association (Ordem) to exercise a regulated profession, regulated by Directive 2005/36/EC. Programme pages say inscription in the Ordem dos Arquitetos Portugueses is possible only after completing both cycles of the integrated master's. Additional Ordem requirements (internship, exams) were not verified. Source

No degree on this site automatically permits anyone to practise as an architect, and nothing here is visa, work-permit or credit-transfer advice.

Languages and admissions

Teaching languages. Portuguese is the main teaching language. FA.ULisboa's PhD offers a calendar taught exclusively in English; ESG Gallaecia lists Portuguese and Spanish as its languages.

Admissions and portfolios. Entry to the integrated master's is mainly through the national access contest, with entrance exams such as Geometria Descritiva, Desenho and Matemática; institutions set minimum exam scores (ESAP and UBI state 95 on a 0-200 scale). Other regimes exist for transfers, over-23s and international students. Source
