Research methodology
From discovery to publication
- Discover. Searches by destination, degree level and delivery, in English and local languages; institutional catalogs; national education registers; accreditation and validation directories. Rankings, Wikipedia and third-party directories are used for discovery only and never verify a fact. A search engine may omit programs, so a missing result is never read as a closure and a quiet search is never read as completeness.
- Check the program is current. We look for active admissions, current curriculum and delivery, a current tuition year, and any renaming, suspension or replacement. Archived PDFs can support history but not current availability.
- Record facts with sources. Every non-empty fact stores the official page and a short verbatim quote. A script re-fetches the page and looks for the quote; a fact whose quote cannot be found is withheld or downgraded. Pages that block automated readers are skipped and listed, never bypassed.
- Keep levels apart. Institution, campus and program are separate records. Accreditation, language, fees and duration belong to the program and campus.
- Review and date. Each record shows when it was last checked. Stale records are flagged for re-checking.
What counts as an architecture program
Bachelor’s, master’s, integrated single-cycle and doctoral degrees in architecture, including formally identified specializations (architectural design, sustainable architecture, computational design, digital architecture, architectural technology within an architecture degree, history and theory, conservation and adaptive reuse, housing and urban architecture, advanced architectural design). Landscape architecture, urban design, interior architecture, architectural engineering and building science are recorded only as clearly labelled adjacent subjects at institutions that also teach architecture, and are excluded from default results and selections. General interior design, civil engineering, construction management and urban planning degrees are not architecture degrees. Short courses, software tutorials, bootcamps and non-degree certificates are excluded.
Pathway classification
We distinguish pre-professional, professional, post-professional or specialist and research degrees. A pathway is shown only when a statement on an official page supports it, with the quote beside it and the jurisdiction it applies to; otherwise the program is shown as not classified. The degree abbreviation never decides it: a BA or BSc in architectural studies is not automatically a professional B.Arch, a specialist MSc is not automatically an entry-to-practice M.Arch, and an M.Arch is not automatically registration-qualifying everywhere.
Recognition, accreditation and validation
We separate institutional recognition, degree-awarding authority, program accreditation, professional-body validation, eligibility toward registration and full professional registration. Each record names the authority, the exact program and campus, the standing (full, candidate, conditional), the dates and the source. Candidate status is never shown as full accreditation. Bodies such as NAAB, CACB, RIBA, ARB, AACA and NZRAB have different roles; we check each body’s actual role and do not treat their listings as interchangeable. Records are marked verified only when the authority’s own listing or document was read.
Tuition and costs
The original currency is authoritative. We do not convert currencies, rank by price, or compare annual tuition with whole-program tuition. Each price keeps its year, billing basis and the student category the page names; nationality alone does not decide which fee applies. Studio fees, materials, printing, software, equipment, field trips, campus residencies and application charges are recorded separately where published. A program total is shown only when a source states it or when annual tuition and a single published duration support a clearly labelled calculation.
Online and hybrid
We verify whether “online” means the complete degree, selected modules, a temporary arrangement, a non-degree course, a hybrid program or an advanced pathway that needs an existing qualification. Mandatory campus studios, residencies, in-person assessment, local placements and live-attendance requirements are recorded separately from professional pathway status. An institution’s location is not treated as proof of where it enrols online students.
Editorial selections
The best-school pages are unranked editorial selections, not league tables. Each states what was considered, its criteria (verified qualification and pathway, curriculum, studio structure, facilities, tuition and admissions transparency, student support, research opportunities, documented outcomes where comparable), its sources, its limitations and its review date. For master’s selections we separate first-professional, advanced-entry professional and post-professional or specialist pathways. We do not claim to have visited campuses, tested courses or surveyed employers. A university-wide ranking is never presented as a ranking of its architecture program, and external rankings are cited only by publisher, subject and edition. Sponsorship has no influence on selection.
What we do not do
- We do not invent institutions, programs, accreditation, facilities, partnerships, faculty biographies, tuition, scholarships, outcomes, rankings or reviews.
- We do not imply that any degree grants permission to practise, a visa, a job or admission.
- We do not copy third-party directories or ranking tables, or use imagery we are not licensed to use. Linking to an official showcase does not authorise copying its contents.
Corrections and updates
Fees, deadlines and programs change. Past dates are shown as past and never rolled forward. See report a correction and the sponsorship disclosure. Coverage and open gaps by destination are on the destinations page.
