Architecture Schools in Finland

6 researched institutions with a campus here, offering 11 architecture programs. This is the research done to date, not a complete list of every program.

How results are ordered: alphabetically by institution, or by most recently checked when you choose that sort. There is no price ranking, because tuition in different currencies, fee categories and bases (per year, per credit, whole program) is not comparable. Adjacent subjects such as landscape architecture appear only when you choose a subject. A value we could not verify is shown as “not published”, never as “no”. Items marked Sponsored are paid placements; they never change accreditation information, verification or order. Online programs are not counted as physically located in a state or city, and an institution’s location does not tell you whether it enrols students from your country.

About architecture education in Finland

How architecture education is organised

Architecture is taught at three universities, Aalto University (Espoo), Tampere University and the University of Oulu, in a 3+2 year structure (a bachelor's of 180 credits followed by a 120-credit architect's master's). Bachelor's phases are taught in Finnish (Aalto also in Swedish); the master's phase is available in English at all three. Separately, universities of applied sciences (Oulu UAS, Metropolia, Savonia, and per Savonia also Tampere UAS and Turku UAS) teach a four-year Finnish-language building-architect (rakennusarkkitehti AMK) degree.

Qualification structures

Names and levels are local to Finland. Similar names in other countries are not interchangeable.

Tekniikan kandidaatti + arkkitehti (3+2 years, 180+120 op)
Aalto states admission to the bachelor's gives the right to complete the 2-year architect's degree, and that the bachelor's alone does not give the architect's professional qualification. Oulu and Tampere publish the same 180+120 credit structure. Source
Master of Science (Architecture), English-taught
Two-year, 120 credit master's at Aalto, Tampere (Sustainable Architecture) and Oulu; non-EU/EEA students pay tuition (Aalto EUR 20,000, Oulu EUR 14,000, Tampere EUR 12,000 per year). Source
Doctor of Science (Architecture)
Aalto lists the degree among its doctoral degrees (full-time target four years; no tuition fees; application Feb-March annually); Tampere's Doctoral Programme in Built Environment offers Doctor of Science (Architecture) with a 4-year planned duration and an architecture and urban planning and design research field (application period 3 August-30 November 2026). Source
Rakennusarkkitehti (AMK), building architect (240 credits, 4 years, universities of applied sciences)
Oulu UAS, Metropolia and Savonia publish a four-year, 240-credit building-architect degree; Savonia's page says the aptitude test is shared by Metropolia, Oulu UAS, Savonia, Tampere UAS and Turku UAS. Oulu UAS says graduates may apply with a portfolio to the University of Oulu's architecture master's (about two years), and that abroad the degree is equated with a three-year bachelor's. Metropolia teaches it in Finnish; both Metropolia and Oulu UAS say the degree gives competence for demanding design tasks under the law only after work experience. Source

Bodies that matter, and what each one does

Accreditation, validation, education authority and registration are different roles. Do not read a listing by one body as evidence from another.

Finnish Association of Architects (SAFA)
Professional membership association looking out for the interests of architects working in Finland. As an agency authorised by the Ministry of the Environment, it grants its full members certificates up to the standard level of competence required of building designers and verifies the equivalence of foreign qualifications; higher certificates for construction design duties are applied for from FISE. It does not accredit degree programmes.
Ministry of the Environment (building permit competence)
Per SAFA, since the Building Act took effect at the start of 2025, construction design and site management are regulated roles and competence must be shown by a certificate issued by an organisation the Ministry authorises (the Ministry's own website returned 403 to a direct fetch and was not read).
Finnish Education Evaluation Centre (FINEEC / KARVI)
Independent authority responsible for national evaluation of education across the whole education system; no programme-specific architecture evaluation was located.
FISE
Per SAFA, the body to which applications for higher certificates of competence for construction design duties are filed.

Route to registration

Current rules as described by the official source; always check the authority directly.

According to SAFA, construction design and site management roles became regulated professions when the Building Act entered into force at the start of 2025, with competence shown by a certificate from an organisation authorised by the Ministry of the Environment. Universities state that their architect's degree gives eligibility or the right to practise as an architect, subject to national and local rules. Source

No degree on this site automatically permits anyone to practise as an architect, and nothing here is visa, work-permit or credit-transfer advice.

Languages and admissions

Teaching languages. Bachelor's programmes at Aalto, Tampere and Oulu are in Finnish (Aalto allows Swedish for coursework and thesis); master's programmes in architecture are taught in English at Aalto, Tampere and Oulu.

Admissions and portfolios. Bachelor's applications go through the national joint application (Oulu and Aalto: 9-23 March 2027); master's applicants submit a portfolio (Aalto: at most 24 pages) in application rounds in December-January. Non-EU/EEA/Swiss master's applicants pay a EUR 100 application fee through Studyinfo (stated by Aalto and Tampere). Source
