How results are ordered: alphabetically by institution, or by most recently checked when you choose that sort. There is no price ranking, because tuition in different currencies, fee categories and bases (per year, per credit, whole program) is not comparable. Adjacent subjects such as landscape architecture appear only when you choose a subject. A value we could not verify is shown as “not published”, never as “no”. Items marked Sponsored are paid placements; they never change accreditation information, verification or order. Online programs are not counted as physically located in a state or city, and an institution’s location does not tell you whether it enrols students from your country.

About architecture education in New Zealand

How architecture education is organised

In New Zealand the route to registration is a first degree in architecture (a three-year Bachelor of Architectural Studies or the AUT Bachelor of Architecture and Future Environments) followed by a two-year Master of Architecture (Professional). The New Zealand Registered Architects Board (NZRAB) lists the degrees it recognises for registration, and NZRAB licenses the Australian and New Zealand architecture program accreditation procedure from AACA.

Qualification structures

Names and levels are local to New Zealand. Similar names in other countries are not interchangeable.

Master of Architecture (Professional) recognised for registration
NZRAB's Pathway 1 list names the Master of Architecture (Professional) at the University of Auckland (also with heritage conservation, urban design or urban planning), Unitec, Victoria University of Wellington, Auckland University of Technology and Otago Polytechnic. Source
Pre-professional bachelor's degrees
Universities and institutes describe their bachelor degrees (Auckland and Unitec and Victoria BAS, AUT Bachelor of Architecture and Future Environments) as the first stage that leads into the Master of Architecture (Professional). Source
Other master's and research degrees
Unitec offers a by-project Master of Architecture that it says is not the accredited degree for registration, and Victoria University of Wellington offers a theory-based Master of Architecture and a thesis-only PhD. Source

Bodies that matter, and what each one does

Accreditation, validation, education authority and registration are different roles. Do not read a listing by one body as evidence from another.

New Zealand Registered Architects Board (NZRAB)
Registers architects, publishes the list of university degrees recognised for initial registration and assesses applicants through its Professional Conversation.
Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA)
Owns the Architecture Program Accreditation Procedure, which NZRAB licenses for accrediting New Zealand programs; AACA lists accredited New Zealand qualifications as recognised for its Architectural Practice Examination.
Te Kahui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA)
Professional body that, with NZRAB, is named by schools as recognising their degrees.

Route to registration

Current rules as described by the official source; always check the authority directly.

NZRAB's Pathway 1 is for graduates who hold both a recognised architectural degree and the required work experience, and the assessment includes a Professional Conversation with an assessment panel. Otago Polytechnic notes that three or more years of professional experience are needed before seeking registration. A degree alone does not entitle anyone to use the title architect. Source

No degree on this site automatically permits anyone to practise as an architect, and nothing here is visa, work-permit or credit-transfer advice.

Languages and admissions

Teaching languages. All programs found are taught in English; AUT and Victoria University of Wellington also reference Te Aranga Maori design principles and Te Reo names for their schools.

Admissions and portfolios. Master of Architecture (Professional) entry normally requires the matching bachelor degree with a minimum GPA; for example the University of Auckland asks for a BAS with a GPA of 4.0 or higher and a portfolio, written statement and CV if the BAS is more than two years old.
