Architecture Schools in Austria

10 researched institutions with a campus here, offering 22 architecture programs. This is the research done to date, not a complete list of every program.

How results are ordered: alphabetically by institution, or by most recently checked when you choose that sort. There is no price ranking, because tuition in different currencies, fee categories and bases (per year, per credit, whole program) is not comparable. Adjacent subjects such as landscape architecture appear only when you choose a subject. A value we could not verify is shown as “not published”, never as “no”. Items marked Sponsored are paid placements; they never change accreditation information, verification or order. Online programs are not counted as physically located in a state or city, and an institution’s location does not tell you whether it enrols students from your country.

About architecture education in Austria

How architecture education is organised

Architecture is taught at public technical universities (TU Wien, TU Graz), the University of Innsbruck, three art universities (University of Applied Arts Vienna, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, University of Arts Linz) and at universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen). University programmes follow a six-semester, 180-ECTS bachelor's and a four-semester, 120-ECTS master's that awards the Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.) at the technical universities and Innsbruck; the Academy of Fine Arts and Linz award the Master of Architecture, and the Angewandte master's is a six-semester, 180-ECTS Master of Architecture taught in English. Doctorates are research degrees (doctoral studies in technical sciences at TU Wien, Dr. techn. at TU Graz, a Doctor of Philosophy at Innsbruck and TU Graz's English-language doctoral school). Fachhochschulen run their own bachelor's (BSc in Engineering) and master's programmes, usually with an admission interview.

Qualification structures

Names and levels are local to Austria. Similar names in other countries are not interchangeable.

Bachelor's in architecture (BSc / BSc in Engineering / BArch)
Six semesters and 180 ECTS at TU Wien, TU Graz, Innsbruck, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, University of Arts Linz and the Fachhochschulen. Entry can be restricted: TU Wien allocates 625 places a year in a two-stage procedure in the first semester, and the art universities and several FHs use aptitude tests, portfolios or interviews. Master's in architecture (Dipl.-Ing. / MArch)
Four semesters and 120 ECTS (Dipl.-Ing. at TU Wien, TU Graz, Innsbruck and FH programmes; MArch at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and Linz). The University of Applied Arts Vienna offers a six-semester, 180-ECTS MArch taught in English. Source
Doctorate (doctoral studies in technical sciences, social and economic sciences, or PhD)
Six-semester research doctorates: TU Wien offers a doctorate of technical sciences and a doctorate of social and economic sciences in architecture and states it offers no PhD; TU Graz awards the Dr. techn. in an English-language doctoral school; Innsbruck offers a 180-ECTS PhD. Source

Bodies that matter, and what each one does

Accreditation, validation, education authority and registration are different roles. Do not read a listing by one body as evidence from another.

Bundeskammer der Ziviltechniker:innen (Arch+Ing) and regional Länderkammern
Statutory professional chamber for Ziviltechniker:innen (architects and Ingenieurkonsulent:innen). It informs on and handles the route to the ZT-Befugnis; the Befugnis itself is conferred by the federal ministry after the Ziviltechnikerprüfung, and the holder is sworn in by the provincial governor.
Federal ministry responsible for the Ziviltechniker authorisation
Decides on applications for the ZT-Befugnis (the chamber's form is addressed to the Bundesministerium) and confers it by decision.
AQ Austria (Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria)
National quality assurance agency for universities of applied sciences and private universities; it accredits institutions and study programmes, which forms the basis for state recognition. Public universities are not accredited by AQ Austria.

Route to registration

Current rules as described by the official source; always check the authority directly.

According to the Federal Chamber of Ziviltechniker:innen, the ZT-Befugnis (authorisation to practise as a Ziviltechniker, i.e. as an architect or Ingenieurkonsulent) requires Austrian or EEA citizenship, a completed relevant university or Fachhochschule degree (the chamber names architecture studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and the Applied Arts alongside technical degrees), then three years of relevant practice (for architecture including one year of on-site construction supervision) and a passed Ziviltechnikerprüfung. The ministry confers the authorisation and the provincial governor swears the holder in. A degree on its own therefore does not authorise practice. Several schools state that their master's meets the admission rules for the Ziviltechniker examination or is recognised EU-wide; these are recorded as school-stated. Source

No degree on this site automatically permits anyone to practise as an architect, and nothing here is visa, work-permit or credit-transfer advice.

Languages and admissions

Teaching languages. Most programmes are taught in German and require German proof (typically B2 or C1). Exceptions found: the University of Applied Arts Vienna master's (English), the TU Graz Doctoral School (English), and partly English teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and Hochschule Campus Wien. An English-language website is not evidence of an English-taught programme.

Admissions and portfolios. Admission is often competitive or aptitude-based: TU Wien runs a two-stage selection for 625 bachelor places, TU Graz an admission procedure, the art universities an artistic aptitude test (Linz, Academy, Angewandte) and the FHs an interview or test (CU Kärnten, FH OÖ, Hochschule Campus Wien). Master's entry needs a relevant bachelor's degree; doctorates need a master's/diploma and a supervisor's agreement. Published deadlines on several pages are for 2026/27 and have passed. Source
