Architecture Schools in Sweden

5 researched institutions with a campus here, offering 15 architecture programs. This is the research done to date, not a complete list of every program.

How results are ordered: alphabetically by institution, or by most recently checked when you choose that sort. There is no price ranking, because tuition in different currencies, fee categories and bases (per year, per credit, whole program) is not comparable. Adjacent subjects such as landscape architecture appear only when you choose a subject. A value we could not verify is shown as “not published”, never as “no”. Items marked Sponsored are paid placements; they never change accreditation information, verification or order. Online programs are not counted as physically located in a state or city, and an institution’s location does not tell you whether it enrols students from your country.

About architecture education in Sweden

How architecture education is organised

The architect degree (arkitektexamen) in the Higher Education Ordinance is a 300-credit degree. Five-year architect programmes are offered at KTH (Stockholm), Chalmers (Gothenburg), Lund University's LTH and Umeå University, with English-taught master's options at KTH, Lund and Umeå; Luleå University of Technology offers a separate civil-engineering programme in architecture. Chalmers' English-taught master's programmes in Architectural Design and Urban Design and a doctoral route at each of the four architecture schools are also listed.

Qualification structures

Names and levels are local to Sweden. Similar names in other countries are not interchangeable.

Arkitektexamen (five-year architect programme, 300 hp)
Statutory degree description: the architect degree is awarded after course requirements of 300 higher education credits. Programmes run three years at first-cycle level followed by two advanced years (KTH), and a bachelor's degree can optionally be taken after the first three years. Source
Two-year master's programmes in architecture (120 credits)
English-taught master's programmes at KTH, Lund (two programmes) and Umeå require a bachelor's degree in architecture and a portfolio. Source
Civilingenjör arkitektur (Luleå, 300 hp)
A five-year civil-engineering programme with a degree titled Civilingenjörsexamen, arkitektur, taught in Swedish. Source
Two-year master's programmes at Chalmers (Architectural Design, Urban Design)
Chalmers offers English-taught, 120-credit master's programmes in Architectural Design (portfolio of at least four projects, Bachelor's in architecture, architecture and engineering or interior architecture) and Urban Design (adjacent subject); non-EU/EEA/Swiss tuition is SEK 135,000 per semester (SEK 540,000 for the two years) from academic year 2027/28. Source
Doctoral studies in architecture (KTH, Chalmers, Lund, Umeå)
KTH (four years, five specialisation areas), Chalmers (Graduate school in Architecture), Lund (third-cycle Architecture at the Department of Architecture and Built Environment) and Umeå (240 ECTS, four years, employed doctoral students without tuition fees) run doctoral programmes; Chalmers describes the Swedish research school ResArc as a collaboration between the architecture schools at KTH, Chalmers, LTH and Umeå. Bodies that matter, and what each one does

Accreditation, validation, education authority and registration are different roles. Do not read a listing by one body as evidence from another.

Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR)
Government agency for the education sector and the national application service (universityadmissions.se, application fee SEK 900 for non-EU/EEA/Swiss applicants). Per ACE it is the competent authority for architects' qualifications; registration is not compulsory, the architect profession is not regulated and the title 'architect' is not protected. It does not accredit Swedish programmes.
Sveriges Arkitekter (Architects Sweden)
A trade union and interest organisation (part of Saco) with about 14,000 members, representing over 90 % of working architects, interior architects, landscape architects and planners; it has boards for competitions, ethics and admission of members who were not educated in the usual way. Per ACE, no professional experience is needed for membership, but two years of experience is required for the title 'arkitekt SAR/MSA'. It does not accredit programmes.

Route to registration

Current rules as described by the official source; always check the authority directly.

Per the Architects' Council of Europe, the Swedish Council for Higher Education is the competent authority and registration is not compulsory; the title SAR/MSA is available through membership of Sveriges Arkitekter. Several schools state that their architect degree meets the EU professional qualifications directive. Source

No degree on this site automatically permits anyone to practise as an architect, and nothing here is visa, work-permit or credit-transfer advice.

Languages and admissions

Teaching languages. The five-year programmes at KTH, LTH and Luleå are Swedish-language; Chalmers lists Swedish and English; Umeå's programme pages state instruction is in English. The master's programmes at KTH, Lund and Umeå are taught in English.

Admissions and portfolios. Swedish architect programmes admit part of their places through the special architecture admission test (Arkitektprovet) alongside grades and the national test; master's applicants submit a portfolio via universityadmissions.se. Non-EU/EEA/Swiss applicants pay tuition (for example KTH SEK 642,000 and Lund SEK 540,000 for the full master's programme). Source
