Architecture Schools in Italy

17 researched institutions with a campus here, offering 42 architecture programs. This is the research done to date, not a complete list of every program.

How results are ordered: alphabetically by institution, or by most recently checked when you choose that sort. There is no price ranking, because tuition in different currencies, fee categories and bases (per year, per credit, whole program) is not comparable. Adjacent subjects such as landscape architecture appear only when you choose a subject. A value we could not verify is shown as “not published”, never as “no”. Items marked Sponsored are paid placements; they never change accreditation information, verification or order. Online programs are not counted as physically located in a state or city, and an institution’s location does not tell you whether it enrols students from your country.

About architecture education in Italy

How architecture education is organised

Italian university architecture education runs on two routes in the university pages reviewed here. One is a five-year single-cycle master's (laurea magistrale a ciclo unico, class LM-4 c.u.) entered from secondary school, usually with national programmed access and an admission test. The other is a three-year first-cycle degree (class L-17, Scienze dell'architettura) followed by a two-year LM-4 master's. Several universities also teach LM-4 master's programmes fully or partly in English, and some state the programme is designed to meet the EU architect-qualification directives.

Qualification structures

Names and levels are local to Italy. Similar names in other countries are not interchangeable.

Laurea magistrale a ciclo unico in Architettura (LM-4 c.u.)
Five-year single-cycle programme, 300 credits (CFU/ECTS), entered with a secondary-school diploma; programmed access with an admission test is typical (e.g. national programmed access at Bologna-Cesena, Ferrara, Naples, Bari). Source
Laurea in Scienze dell'architettura (class L-17)
Three-year first-cycle degree (180 CFU). Polimi states that after the professional exam its graduates can enrol as Junior Architect in section B of the register and have the credits to apply for the Master of Science in Architecture. Source
Laurea magistrale in Architettura (LM-4), two years
Two-year, 120-credit master's following an L-17 degree or equivalent; some universities teach it in English (e.g. Iuav, Genoa, Florence, Bologna, Vanvitelli). Florence states graduates may enrol in section A of the register after the State Exam. Source
Doctorate (dottorato di ricerca / PhD)
Research doctorates run by universities; Politecnico di Milano lists three-year English-language PhD programmes in architecture-related fields. Source

Bodies that matter, and what each one does

Accreditation, validation, education authority and registration are different roles. Do not read a listing by one body as evidence from another.

Consiglio Nazionale degli Architetti, Pianificatori, Paesaggisti e Conservatori (CNAPPC)
National council of the architects' profession; publishes the national register (Albo unico nazionale) from data supplied by the provincial Ordini. It does not run university programmes.

Route to registration

Current rules as described by the official source; always check the authority directly.

Per the university pages reviewed, graduates take the Esame di Stato (State Exam) before enrolling in the register of Architects, Planners, Landscape Architects and Conservators: section A (Architecture sector) for the LM-4 master's / single-cycle degree, section B (Junior Architect) for the L-17 bachelor's. Exact exam requirements and rules were not verified on a ministry or CNAPPC page. Source

No degree on this site automatically permits anyone to practise as an architect, and nothing here is visa, work-permit or credit-transfer advice.

Languages and admissions

Teaching languages. Most single-cycle and many bachelor's programmes are taught in Italian only; English-taught LM-4 master's exist at Politecnico di Milano (Mantova), Iuav, Genoa, Bologna, Florence (iCAD curriculum) and Vanvitelli. Check each programme page for the exact language of instruction.

Admissions and portfolios. Single-cycle architecture degrees and the L-17 bachelor's at many universities have national or local programmed access with an admission test (e.g. Ferrara, Bologna-Cesena, Roma Tre). Master's entry is evaluated on the first-cycle degree; Polimi's Architecture master's requires a Bachelor Degree in Architecture and a portfolio. Source
