About architecture education in Belgium
How architecture education is organised
Architecture education in Belgium is organised by the Communities. In Flanders (KU Leuven, Ghent University, Hasselt University, University of Antwerp, VUB) and in the French Community (ULB, UCLouvain, ULiège, UMons) the programmes found follow a three-year bachelor of 180 credits and a two-year master of 120 credits. To work as an independent architect, programme pages state that a two-year traineeship under the Orde van Architecten / Ordre des architectes follows the master's degree.
Qualification structures
Names and levels are local to Belgium. Similar names in other countries are not interchangeable.
- Bachelor + master in architecture
- A 180-credit bachelor and a 120-credit master, offered in Dutch in Flanders and in French in the French Community; KU Leuven also offers an English-taught master of architecture on its Ghent and Brussels campuses. Source
- Engineer-architect (ingenieur-architect / ingénieur civil architecte)
- Ghent University, UCLouvain (Louvain-la-Neuve) and VUB offer engineering-based architecture programmes alongside or instead of art-school-style architecture degrees. Source
Bodies that matter, and what each one does
Accreditation, validation, education authority and registration are different roles. Do not read a listing by one body as evidence from another.
- Orde van Architecten - Vlaamse Raad
- Statutory professional order (established by law in 1963) with a Flemish council; trainees must be entered on a list of trainees (stagiairs) before starting the post-diploma traineeship. It does not accredit degrees.
- Nationale Raad van de Orde van Architecten (NROA/CNOA)
- National council of the Order of Architects.
- NVAO (Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders)
- Accredits Flemish higher-education programmes; programme-level status was not verified for each programme in this research.
- AEQES (Agence pour l'Evaluation de la Qualité de l'Enseignement Supérieur)
- Quality-assurance agency for higher education in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (French Community); not a registration body.

The Orde van Architecten states that a trainee must apply to be entered on a list of trainees before the traineeship begins and may start at any time after obtaining the diploma. KU Leuven, UHasselt and UCLouvain describe a two-year traineeship after the master; UMons describes two years as a trainee under a supervising architect and under the control of the Ordre des Architectes. No degree on this site automatically permits anyone to practise as an architect, and nothing here is visa, work-permit or credit-transfer advice.
Languages and admissions
Teaching languages. Flemish programmes are mainly Dutch-taught, with the English-taught Master of Architecture at KU Leuven (Ghent and Brussels) and the English-taught Master of Science in Architectural Engineering at VUB; French Community programmes (ULB, UCLouvain, ULiège, UMons) are French-taught.
Admissions and portfolios. KU Leuven's English master requires a bachelor's degree in the same field, a digital portfolio of at most 20 slides and proof of English proficiency unless exempt; the KU Leuven bachelor in architecture gives direct access to its master. Source
