How results are ordered: alphabetically by institution, or by most recently checked when you choose that sort. There is no price ranking, because tuition in different currencies, fee categories and bases (per year, per credit, whole program) is not comparable. Adjacent subjects such as landscape architecture appear only when you choose a subject. A value we could not verify is shown as “not published”, never as “no”. Items marked Sponsored are paid placements; they never change accreditation information, verification or order. Online programs are not counted as physically located in a state or city, and an institution’s location does not tell you whether it enrols students from your country.

About architecture education in Australia

How architecture education is organised

In Australia the accredited qualification for architects is the Master of Architecture; bachelor-level qualifications are not accredited. Students usually complete a recognised three-year bachelor (named Architectural Design, Design in Architecture, Architectural Studies and similar) and then a two-year Master of Architecture, although several providers also admit graduates of other disciplines on a longer route (for example Monash, Melbourne, UWA). The eight state and territory architect registration boards hold the statutory responsibility for accrediting programs, and AACA administers the accreditation procedure on their behalf.

Qualification structures

Names and levels are local to Australia. Similar names in other countries are not interchangeable.

Accredited professional Master of Architecture
AACA's list of accredited qualifications (updated September 2026) names Master of Architecture programs at about 20 Australian providers, including combined and double-master variants at Melbourne, Deakin, Monash and others. Each program has its own course code and commencement year, so the exact program must be checked rather than assumed from the university name. AACA's profession page says 22 Australian universities offer the accredited professional Master of Architecture. Source
Pre-professional bachelor's degrees
Bachelor-level architecture degrees (for example UTAS Bachelor of Architecture and Built Environments, UTS Bachelor of Design in Architecture, UNSW Bachelor of Architectural Studies) are described by their universities as the first stage that leads into the Master of Architecture; they are not accredited on their own. Source
Research degrees
Research masters and PhDs in architecture exist (for example Deakin's Master of Architecture (Research) and PhD in Architecture and Built Environment); they are research qualifications, not the registration-route master's. Source

Bodies that matter, and what each one does

Accreditation, validation, education authority and registration are different roles. Do not read a listing by one body as evidence from another.

Architects Accreditation Council of Australia (AACA)
Administers the national architecture program accreditation procedure for the state and territory registration boards, maintains the list of accredited qualifications, the National Standard of Competency for Architects and the Architectural Practice Examination.
State and Territory Architect Registration Boards
Hold statutory responsibility for accrediting architecture programs in their jurisdictions and for registering architects under the state and territory Architects Acts.
Australian Institute of Architects
Professional body; takes part in accreditation review panels alongside AACA and the registration boards, and is named by several universities as recognising their Master of Architecture.
NSW Architects Registration Board
One of the eight statutory architect registration boards; established under the Architects Act 2003 (NSW) to register architects, investigate discipline, pursue unregistered use of the title architect, accredit programs of study and educate the public. Boards jointly own AACA.
Architects Registration Board of Victoria (ARBV)
One of the eight statutory architect registration boards; established under the Architects Act 1991 (Vic) to register architects, investigate discipline, pursue unregistered use of the title architect, accredit programs of study and educate the public. Boards jointly own AACA.
Board of Architects of Queensland
One of the eight statutory architect registration boards; established under the Architects Act 2002 (Qld) to register architects, investigate discipline, pursue unregistered use of the title architect, accredit programs of study and educate the public. Boards jointly own AACA.
The Architectural Practice Board of South Australia
One of the eight statutory architect registration boards; established under the Architectural Practice Act 2009 (SA), printed on the AACA page as 'Architectural Practice ACT 2009 (SA)' to register architects, investigate discipline, pursue unregistered use of the title architect, accredit programs of study and educate the public. Boards jointly own AACA.
Architects Board of Western Australia
One of the eight statutory architect registration boards; established under the Architects Act 2004 (WA) to register architects, investigate discipline, pursue unregistered use of the title architect, accredit programs of study and educate the public. Boards jointly own AACA.
Australian Capital Territory Architects Board
One of the eight statutory architect registration boards; established under the Architects Act 2004 (ACT) to register architects, investigate discipline, pursue unregistered use of the title architect, accredit programs of study and educate the public. Boards jointly own AACA.
Board of Architects of Tasmania
One of the eight statutory architect registration boards; established under the Architects Act 1929 (Tas) to register architects, investigate discipline, pursue unregistered use of the title architect, accredit programs of study and educate the public. Boards jointly own AACA.
Northern Territory Architects Board
One of the eight statutory architect registration boards; established under the Architects Act 1963 (NT), shown on the AACA page as in force 26 August 2025 to register architects, investigate discipline, pursue unregistered use of the title architect, accredit programs of study and educate the public. Boards jointly own AACA.

Route to registration

Current rules as described by the official source; always check the authority directly.

AACA states that the most common pathway to registration is completion of an accredited Australian architecture qualification followed by the Architectural Practice Examination, after which the applicant applies to the relevant state or territory Architect Registration Board. Individual universities add that supervised practical experience is also needed (for example UWA states a minimum of 3,300 hours). A degree alone does not entitle anyone to practise or use the title architect. Source

No degree on this site automatically permits anyone to practise as an architect, and nothing here is visa, work-permit or credit-transfer advice.

Languages and admissions

Teaching languages. All programs found are taught in English.

Admissions and portfolios. Master of Architecture admission normally requires an architecture bachelor degree with a minimum grade average and often a design portfolio or a selection task; for example Swinburne asks applicants with other architecture degrees for a 10-20 page portfolio and personal statement, and UTS asks for a portfolio when the grade average is in a lower band. Check each program's own page. Source
