The two names sound alike, and some countries use them in overlapping ways, but they are usually different disciplines with different accreditors and different professional outcomes. This guide explains the difference as the accrediting bodies describe it, and how ArchitectureSchools.net handles the subject.
What architecture programs are
In most countries a degree counts as architecture when it prepares students for the design of buildings and sits within the architecture education system of that country. Whether it leads toward registration as an architect depends on the jurisdiction's regulator and accreditor. In the US, for example, NCARB says most jurisdictions require a degree from an accredited architecture program (accredited by NAAB) for an initial license; in the UK, registration is with the Architects Registration Board. See understanding accreditation and validation. Architecture degrees usually give heavy weight to design studio, history and theory, and technology taught as part of design.
What architectural engineering programs are
Architectural engineering is an engineering discipline concerned with how buildings work: structures, mechanical systems, electrical and lighting systems, and construction. ABET, which accredits programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology, publishes program criteria for "Architectural and Similarly Named Engineering Programs". Those criteria apply to engineering programs that include "architectural" or a similar word in their titles. As ABET words it:
- the curriculum includes mathematics through differential equations, calculus-based physics and chemistry;
- four basic curriculum areas are building structures, building mechanical systems, building electrical systems, and construction or construction management;
- the curriculum must provide coverage at the design level in at least one of these areas, considering building performance and sustainability;
- it includes basic concepts of architecture in the context of architectural design and history.
ABET also says that it accredits programs, not degrees, departments, colleges, institutions or individuals, and that accreditation is a review against standards, not a ranking. So an ABET-accredited architectural engineering program is an engineering program that includes some architecture content. It is not an architecture program accredited by an architecture accreditor, and ABET's criteria do not say it leads to architect registration.
Differences in practice
| Architecture | Architectural engineering | |
|---|---|---|
| Core emphasis | Building design, space, form, site, history, theory | Building systems and performance: structure, mechanical, electrical, construction |
| Typical accreditor (where one exists) | An architecture accreditor such as NAAB in the US or CACB in Canada | An engineering accreditor such as ABET (US) |
| Professional route | Architect registration through the regulator for the jurisdiction | Engineering licensure or chartership through engineering regulators, where applicable |
| Studio weight | Central | Varies; design is mainly engineering design |
The last two rows describe general structure. Professional routes differ between countries, and you should confirm them with the relevant regulator rather than relying on this table.
Why the title can mislead
Naming is not consistent. Some European universities offer a master's called "Architectural Engineering" that is part of an architecture or engineering faculty and may have its own structure; the Vrije Universiteit Brussel's Master of Science in Architectural Engineering is one example in our research. Elsewhere, programs titled "Architectural Engineering" may fall under civil, building or construction engineering. A degree called "Master of Engineering in Architecture" can lead to a different professional path than "Master of Architecture" in the same country. In Germany the Federal Chamber of Architects notes that eligibility for registration depends on state law and on the program, and advises checking with the state chamber; a general degree title does not settle the question. The UK's ARB lists the qualifications it accredits for registration in a schedule, and a course not listed does not count toward UK architect registration under that route.
For these reasons, read the program page and the regulator or accreditor, not just the name. If you want to be an architect, ask the registration authority whether a given degree counts. If you want to be an engineer, ask the engineering regulator.
How this directory treats architectural engineering
ArchitectureSchools.net is a directory of architecture degrees. We include architectural engineering only as an adjacent subject: we add such a program when the same institution also has an architecture offering, we label it with its subject, and we exclude it from default architecture results. You can still find it by choosing the adjacent-subject filter on program listings. We list civil engineering and construction management programs as outside scope. We do not claim that an engineering accreditation is an architecture accreditation, and we do not infer professional outcomes from a title. See the methodology for how subjects are labelled.
Choosing between them
Questions that help:
- Do I want to be responsible primarily for spatial and design decisions (architecture) or for how building systems perform (engineering)?
- Which regulator governs the title I want, in the country where I want to use it?
- Does the program page name an accreditor, and does the accreditor's own list include it?
- How much of the curriculum is studio design compared with mathematics, physics and systems design?
- Can I switch later? Ask the school, in writing, about transfer or bridging; do not assume.
Browse bachelor's and master's architecture listings, or use compare once you have a shortlist. No listing promises registration, employment or salary.
